We drove east on Interstate 8 after leaving our RV resort. At Gila Bend, we drove a couple of miles out of our way to go to the only grocery store in the place, but when we got in there the shelves were at least 2/3 bare. It turns out the place had just changed management and we just picked the wrong time. We drove on down south to Ajo, and there we got our groceries in a good IGA store.
After shopping we swung around to the open pit copper mine, which is the reason to be of the town of Ajo.
The center of town is really pretty, with a central square full of palm trees, and a big Spanish style Cathedral.
We continued on south to Oregon Pipe Cactus National monument, which is really a pretty and interesting place. The campsite (N31 56 25.8, W112 48 40.6) is in the midst of one of the most varied desert landscapes, with all kinds of various cacti and desert plants. There was no cell phone or WiFi coverage in this wilderness park, so there was no posting of a blog tonight!
The Oregon Pipe Cactus grows mostly in Mexico, but reaches up across the border just in this area. There's several of them in this picture of Doreen, but a really good example at the right hand side. We are just 7 miles from the Mexican border here.
