We got up in plenty of time for church again, and again ended up being late. This was the fault of our GPS. It told us to go where I had programed it rather than where we wanted to go! It's all the GPS's fault. It should have been a 15 minute drive, but ended up a half hour. To make matters worse, we had to find the room (the library, with all sorts of interesting books) in this large Jewish Community Center, where the church service was being held, which was no mean feat. We arrived, however, just as the announcements were finishing up, and the service was about to start, so we didn't really miss the service after all.
This was the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America in Tucson, which is a mission congregation of the church of that denomination based in Phoenix. It turns out the pastor, Jason Ryce, is leaving for another pastorate in two weeks, leaving this small group with an uncertain future. He preached his second last sermon in a series of about 35 sermons in Hebrews. In all my life of attending church, I've never heard anyone preach a series in Hebrews for some reason or other. I've always thought this would be a really rich book to base a sermon series on, and wondered why it seems to be so neglected.
After church, after forgetting for the third time to take a picture of the place, we drove down to the south end of Tucson to the Pima County Fairgrounds (N32 02 34.2, W110 47 05.5), where we camped for the rest of the day and night. This is a huge place covering many many acres of flat land. There were rows of RVs lined up next to each other in the area where there were electric and water hookups, but we settled for dry camping, and found a nice place by ourselves under a nice big tree for shade. The fairgrounds were certainly big enough to provide space for a long walk!
Just after dark, a bunch of trucks and diggers began making loud noises at some construction site nearby, and we thought this was going to be a long night. What they were doing starting up on a Sunday evening, I don't know. In any event, along about 11pm they abruptly stopped, so we did have a quiet sleep.
Good to see you are doing so well. We have been to the OK Coral...hope you you went to see the grave yard. You are teasing me into doing a series on Hebrews:) We spent a couple of week there in our adult Sunday School class. Here is a little teaser for you—Why does the apostle deal so much with angels?
ReplyDeleteI don't know - I suppose because Hebrews quotes the Psalms so much and the Psalms refer to angels? Psalm 8 says He made him a little lower than the angels, I suppose referring to Christ's humitlity. Stephen in Acts says the law was given through the angels, and the Jewish Christians would be sensitive to the giving of the law?
