Before leaving this morning, Doreen and I walked down to The Occoneechee Plantation Terrace Gardens, part of the State Park here. This plantation once comprised 1000 acres of land, and a dwelling that was built in 1839.
The stones in this picture outline where the house stood. But the house burned to the ground on Christmas eve of 1898, believed to be the result of candles used to decorate a Christmas tree. (It's hard for us to believe people could be so careless!)
There are really no gardens here, but the terraces remain that presumably were covered in gardens at one time. It is pretty, and very green at this spring time of year.
The walk back and forth from our campsite was pretty too.
The road, Route 58 that we rode on yesterday coming to this park, continued on to Norfolk. And, rather than pouring rain, it was a beautiful sunny day. This road is just great: four lanes, with hardly any traffic (at leastl until we got very near Norfolk), and gentle hills and curves. And the speed limit is reasonable, 55 to 60 mph, unlike the 70 to 75 mph speed limits of the Interstates.
And we had lunch (well, really it turned out to be lunch and dinner) in a Cracker Barrel today. We keep seeing the Cracker Barrel signs at almost every interchange when traveling on an Interstate, but today is the first time we've tried one. Mmmm, they are pretty good!
So, we are parked at a Super Walmart (N36 51 41.1, W76 12 29.4) in Norfolk tonight. And here's the security guy, in a pickup truck this time, and the flashing orange light isn't as obvious and didn't show up in the picture. It's interesting to watch all the goings on as the night progresses. Cars come and cars go, but a few more go than come, until by about midnight or so all that's left are the people working the night shift in the Walmart store.
