Bumpy Roads

The parking lot at the Visitor Center is pretty quiet in the morning, and here we are lined up with the other overnight campers. We had a slow morning and didn't get away until about 11.

 

As you can see, the Visitor Center in Savannah is housed in the old train station. This early in the morning, the place is pretty deserted, but a few hours later it will be humming with people and tour buses.

 

After we pulled out of the parking lot, within just two or three city blocks, we were headed up a steep climb onto the big suspension bridge over the Savannah River, and down again into South Carolina. And immediately we were headed down bumpy roads for the rest of today's driving. South Carolina doesn't put a high priority on fixing their roads. It was all two lane country roads today, through numerous small towns.

 

Checked out one state park which we decided to skip and went to a second, Aitken State Park (N33 33 15.2, W81 29 48.7), where the campground was in a pine forrest with the ground completely covered with pine needles except for the campsites where they had swept the pine needles away. We didn't go that far today; we did a bit of shopping on the way, and that always takes up a lot of time. We went mostly north and a bit west, and we are still somewhat south of Columbus, SC.

 

That was it for today; we put the awning out, and sat out watching a slight shower for awhile. Then when that stopped we had a campfire to cook dinner and keep the no-see-ums at bay. There's no AT&T signal here, so the blog will have to wait until tomorrow.
