We experienced the rays getting warmer and warmer as Doreen sat out this morning with her back to the sun. It was a beautiful morning, and we went for a walk along the dirt road, but it was forecast to be windy for today and tomorrow all over the area of souteastern California. So we were prepared for the wind to put a real damper on the camping experience!
We set off south on the hilly, winding road S2 from our campsite down to Interstate 8, and across to El Centro, where we did a bit of shopping. We passed a group of windmills, which were rotating slowly, but we imagined they would be twirling ever so much faster in a couple of hours.
Interstate 8 passes along close to the Mexican border, and for one stretch it is right on the border. Doreen took this picture out the window of the fence along the border.
We turned off at Ogilby Road (S34) to the north, and up five or six miles, we came to a BLM area where a lot of RVs camp (N32 48 49.0, W114 48 55.8). It seemed more like a gravel pit, as you can see in this photo taken near sunset. There were lots of other RVs around, but it seemed like there must be better sites in the area than what we found. In any event, the wind had come up by the time we got in, and it made it seem less desirable than ever.
I climbed a little up the nearby mountain and took this picture showing Miss Travelaire in the lower left.
At least there was a decent desert sunset, and we were able to sit out in the wind shadow of Miss Travelaire and enjoy it. Then after a couple of hours of darkness, the wind died down to the point where we could sit out comfortably under the stars.
AT&T provides us with LTE data connection here, even out in the middle of the desert. My pictures upload really fast!
