We love the Sonoran Desert with it's majestic Saguaro cacti.
But another constituent of the desert here is the Cholla cactus. And this one is deadly! (well, that's a slight exageration)
If you happen to touch one of these spines they don't just prick you, they lodge into your skin, with several spines sticking out in all directions. So you have a job getting it out without getting more spines stuck in your fingers. Tanner soon learned to steer clear of these!
The main activity for the day was to drive up to the end of the gravel road, just at the foot of that mountain in yesterday's pictures. Then I did a hike of about 1/2 mile up the main canyon you see at the center of that mountain to where there is a grove of palm trees growing high up in a narrow side canyon.
The sun only shines into this side canyon for an hour or so on towards mid day. I arrived before the sun illuminated the palms, and waited for at least half an hour for the sunlight to cooperate.
These are apparently the only native palm trees in Arizona.
Doreen was not about to make this hike after her hike the other day to the palm oasis in Borrego Springs. But it was a fairly easy hike, although up hill the whole way. You can see Miss Travelaire away down there in this telephoto picture taken from up in the canyon.
It's always pretty in the desert just after sunset! I took this picture while waiting for supper to cook on our campfire.
