Cool Cloudy Day

The night was not as cold as I thought it might be, a low of 44 F. But we had wind! I thought we were at an unsheltered anchorage in our boat as a storm came through! Miss Travelaire had a hard time standing up! We awoke to a clear sky; the sky last night was phenomenal, so dark and clear. About the only light to mess the dark sky up was the light of Las Vegas, a very faint glow on the northern horizon. The clear sky did not last, as clouds moved in from the northwest, and the rest of the day was cloudy and cool, with even a few sprinkles. But we're thankful the wind has died down.

 

We went for a short walk around the campground area this morning, and listened to a sermonaudio sermon ( there are no churches anywhere near here!) Then we decided to pull up stakes and move over to the Kelso area of the park. Kelso (N35 00 45.9, W115 39 07.2) was a Southern Pacific railroad stop, which had a fancy railroad station in the early part of the 20th century. The station was closed down by Southern Pacific who wanted to tear it down. But it was saved, and the Park Service has recently restored it to it's original glory.

 

It's a beautiful building, which included a dining area shown in this picture, and quarters for railroad personel upstairs.

The only campground in the park suitable for RVs is the Hole-in-the-Wall campground where we stayed the last couple of days. However, it is permissable to camp near any road in the park where there is a space that has been used before (has a fire ring from previous campers and a level clear spot to park). That's what we intended to do for tonight, and we headed up the road from Kelso to Baker looking for a place to camp, but we had a time finding one. We finally did find a place just off a sandy side road (N35 15 17.6, W115 58 26.9). I hope we don't get stuck in the sand leaving tomorrow; Miss Travelaire's footing isn't that great in the sand! The desert is not nearly as picturesque here at lower elevation, but it should make it somewhat warmer tonight. We have the awning out to sit under, not to protect us from the sun this time, but to protect us from the rain sprinkles!
