We Picked The Wrong Week!

I forgot to mention yesterday that it rained. On the way to church it just poured, but then for the rest of the day it just showered. We could get this in Victoria; why'd we have to come down here for rain? Then during the night, it rained along with lots of thunder. Doreen hadn't been sleeping well the last few weeks, but she slept right through the thunder. I kept thinking: the next clap will wake her up, but no, she slept right through it.

It was still drizzling this morning as we got away at aroung 9 AM, as you can see in this picture Doreen took through the windshield with our iphone. We were atop Siskiyou Summit by 10:15, and down the other side into California. It's a good thing the temperature is so warm; otherwise there would be piles of snow up there.

We passed Mount Shasta, and Doreen took this picture which resembles the picture of the mountain I took on our last trip. We never seem to see the top of it.

As soon as you get down the hill to the town of Redding, you are in the central valley of Callifornia, and we noticed the temperature rise, and the sky brightening. It wasn't too long before we saw the sun peaking out, and by the time we got to our destination it was a reasonably pleasant day.

Now, about our destination: we intended to camp at the Colusa County Fairgrounds. It is hard to find good places to camp in central and northern California. The State Parks are a complete bust. And there really are very few campgrounds at all in this central valley that Interstate 5 runs through, because it is mostly agricultural land. I found a site on the internet that listed a bunch of county fairgrounds, which have camping at very resonable rates. So we had picked this one in the town of Colusa out. But we picked the wrong week! Turns out, there is the Farm Equipment Show on this one week, and the camping was all taken up by that. So, back to square one, we headed 20 miles over to Yuba City to the Super Walmart (N39 08 36.5, W121 39 18.5), where I hope we can stay for the night. And here I am in the Walmart parking lot, with Miss Travelaire and Tanner, and the sun (first time we've seen it!) just setting in the background.

  1. Hope you get more sunshine real soon! The scenery is lovely though!

  2. Glad to hear you are finally hitting some sunshine.

We always found the Walmart campgrounds to be a bit noisy because big trucks would run their generators all night. But it is nice to be able to shop :-) One time we camped in a Walmart parking lot that actually had a lake!

  3. The main problem we've had with Walmart is that maybe once every half dozen stays, a parking lot sweeper starts up at about 2 or 3 in the morning, going up and down the lot making lots of noise for about an hour.
