A Nice Place After a Rough Dirt Road

We didn’t want to go too far this morning, so after listening to a service from Parkside Church (couldn’t seem to get Lighthouse’s service), we set off down I-15 for half an hour.  Turning off onto a gravel road, we made our way 4 miles into Afton Canyon Campground.  It was pretty much washboard the whole way, and getting near the end, Miss Travelaire told us she’d go down this steep windy hill, but I won’t guaranteeI’ll bring you back up again!  We were at about the end of what Doreen could stand when we came upon a group campsite full of ATV and dirt bikers.  Tlhey told us we can stay there, but the individual campsites are just down the road.

Sure enough, around the next bend, there were a bunch of campers.  We took the first spot because it looked like the campground may be full.  It is a long weekend, Presidents Day, (any excuse for a holiday!), so we were a little apprehensive about getting a spot after driving all the way in here.  It turned out there were a lot more sites than we thought, and it was only half full.  Our site turned out to be quite nice (N35 02 17.1, W116 23 02.4, elev 1442 feet), although the railway tracks right next door looked a little ominous!

Wow, the picnic tables at this place are built like a battleship!

The fire pits likewise, and there are two of them.

A few of these crazy-looking vehicles went by 🙂!

We sat around all afternoon, and no trains came by, so that was good.  It looks like a real train track though!

This big railway bridge transverses this huge river😂 just to the left of Harley there.

I talked to a guy who came by, and he said there were a few trains, but they didn’t blow their whistle.  Sure enough, while Harley and I were standing there, along came this train, and I’m not sure if they saw me taking their picture, but they let off a couple of long blasts of the whistle!

As the sun went down, the nearby mountains took on a pretty colour.
