"Unusual Weather" - In Alaska

We woke up to steady rain again.  And it rained steadily all day as we continued south on the Cassiar highway and along the road into Stewart.  We stopped along the way at the glacier, which you could only partially see below the clouds and mist:

And we arrived at Stewart at about 2:30 pm.  Here's Sarah and the boys at the Stewart welcome sight as proof.

After settling in at a very expensive RV campground called Bear River RV Park (N55 57 05.8, W129 58 38.4), we headed in to Hyder Alaska and up to the salmon and bear viewing site, where the bears supposedly come and scoop the spawning salmon up for dinner.  We saw lots of salmon (we could have gone to Goldsream in Victoria for that), but there were no bears!  There was no customs or immigration stop on the way into Alaska.  But on the way out, you passed a Canadian immigration check, where they asked such things as "do you have any marijuana?" :)

We had almost decided to drive the 20 km or so up the road to view the Salmon Glacier which is supposed to be spectacular, but then after enquiring with the rangers about the condition of the gravel road, they said there's no use going up there because in this weather you'll be in the fog and won't be able to see it!

Sarah was determined to see a bear.  So she stayed behind while we all went back to the RV park for supper.  Later, Eric went back to pick her up, Sarah still not having seen a bear.

But on the way out they saw a black bear on the road!  Of course we had seen several black bears on the roads in our travels in the last few days!

Well, it is forcast to rain almost forever here in Stewart, so we will be heading out tomorrow for sunnier climates further south.  Hopefully we can get out the road from Stewart without an avalanche blocking the highway with all this rain!
