Last night there was a car parked just behind us with it's engine running. Every time we looked out it's engine was running. And this morning, the same thing. There actually was a man that got in and out of it, so he slept in the car all night, and it was cold! No sign of the trucker, but his windows were steamed up, so he must have been there. As for us, without being plugged into electricity, we had to run our propane furnace a bit to keep Miss Travelaire a little bit warm.
We both woke up early, and so we just got up, and we were on the road by 7am. It's about a 4 hour drive to the Coho ferry in Port Angeles. We went around by Bremerton because with all the cold and snow, I was wondering how the road would be up the shorter windier way along the Hood canal. That was a mistake because there was an accident near Tacoma that held traffic up for 15 or 20 minutes. But there was plenty of time, and we arrived at the ferry over 2 hours early. After getting settled in to the parking lot, Doreen and I went for a walk around Port Angeles. This picture from up top of the hill overlooking the harbour actually has Miss Travelaire in it (at least her roof).
The Olympic mountains behind the town looked like they were getting a dusting of snow while we were here.
We also stumbled across a little ceremony that the veterans of Port Angeles were putting on. Apparently they do this every Friday in honour of the men of Port Angeles that were killed in action. They were mostly all big husky guys, and they all had black leather jackets on, that made them look like a motorcycle gang!
And this fellow serenaded us the whole time.
After getting across to Victoria, we had to deal with Customs and Immigration, of course. The fellow asked us what we were bringing in, and we told him. Then he said, what ELSE are you bringing in. I had to think quick, and said "Well, we are bringing in 3 boxes of Cheez-its." He had a really puzzled look. So I gave him my line: "You can't buy these in Canada!" That seemed to satisfy him!
No problem getting across to Vancouver Island, and home. But after 5000 Kilometers of travel without mishap, Miss Travelaire blew it in the last 5000 centimeters! There was no snow all the way today until we got to Meadowbrook Ridge, which always seems to get more snow than anywhere around here. Miss Travelaire tried valiantly to make it up the driveway, but not quite! Trying to back up was a disaster and she ended up almost sideways in the driveway. "I told you I I'm not steady on my feet in snow," she said.
But nothing is too difficult for Eric's big deisel pickup, and he had Miss Travelaire back on her feet and helped up to the house in no time.
