Northward Bound, Again

I did a little research on the internet about this dyke, or levee that is next to our campsite. It turns out this is part of a horrendous levee system that keeps water out of Sacramento, Stockton, and a big area of farmland in the surrounding region. Next to New Orleans, this is the biggest situation waiting for a disaster. A lot of this area is below sea level. We never noticed these levees before, but as we travelled out of the region today, we could see they were everywhere.

 

Checked Google and Apple maps first thing this morning, and there was a slowdown in Interstate 5 near Sacramento due to an accident. So, we asked the GPS lady to take us along the back roads that we had used on the way down, that bypass Sacramento. It turned out, this route was faster according to the GPS lady, than going up I5 the whole way.

 

We traveled as far as Redding, which is at the top end of the Central Valley of California, before checking again with the weather and road forecasts. They had been forecasting snow in the passes most days this week, except for Friday. But, on checking it now, it looked like today would be good to go, but tomorrow (Thursday), would be a big snow day. So it was either go for it now, or wait for two days. Doreen was non-committal as usual, so I went for it, and it turned out a pretty nice day, and not a spec of snow anywhere. But, by going all this way, Miss Travelaire put on about 400 miles today, a pretty long haul for Doreen.

 

 

So now we are over the passes, and settled down in Oregon at a park called Valley of the Rougue State Park (N42 24 28.2, W123 08 31.0). We have been here many times before, because it is nice jumping off or landing spot for going over the mountains passes at the Oregon/California border. And Oregon State Parks are always some of the nicest anywhere. It was pretty cold here, but I convinced Doreen to sit out long enough to have her picture taken having her afternoon Cheez-its. (After all, she won't get many more chances to do this, as you can't do this in Canada!)
