Pennsylvania Amish Country

We spent the day traveling through Pennsylvania today. By the time we got up this morning the rains had ceased, and after saying our goodbyes, we left Nina and Jim's place. Within a mile or two it seemed, we were in Pennsylvania, and we traveled up through Amish country. It was so pretty and green and the farms were so neat and tidy. And every few miles we passed an Amish horse and buggy, so you had to be on the lookout because they go so slow.

 

The kids in the back were cute, waving to us as we pulled up behind them.

We discovered after a short while that we were passing close to Quarryville, the town where Doreen's parents had lived, and where there is a really great store, called the Goods Store, run by Mennonite people. So we decided to detour just a short way and drop in there. I think this is the best store in the world. We have stopped in there each time we have been east, and we've bought clothing that we've worn for years. But the store sells everything, from cloths to shoes to hardware, kitchenware, anything you can imagine, and at really good prices. We ended up spending at least an hour wandering around in there and bought a bunch of stuff.

 

Then it was on northward, up along the Susquehanna River for miles and miles, until we came to the Ives Run Recreation Area (N41 53 22.2, W77 10 45.4), another Army Corps of Engineers campground located near the northern border of Pennsylvania. We built a campfire, trying to get rid of most of the firewood we have before we have to go across the Canadian border. Brrrr...It's not like sitting around a campfire down in Florida or California!
