We had a slow morning, and after going for a walk around the campground trail, we didn't get away until around 11:30am. We took this picture of the lake. As you can see, even with the California drought, there is some water there, but it is so far away and so far down that we didn't bother trying to go there.
After leaving, we traveled a the short distance along some windy, hilly roads down to Borrego Springs, our favorite spot. Coming in this way from the west, there is a long steep 8% descent down from about 4000 feet to about 600 feet into Borrego Springs. Going in 2nd gear made for no braking except for a few hairpin turns. We stopped in town and walked around some of the stores before heading out into the desert to find a spot to camp.
Here we are settled in next to one of the many fire rings that scatter about on the desert floor. The temperature here at 3pm this afternoon is 82 F in the shade (that's about 28 C). Quite pleasant after months of cold rainy weather! Turns out, the AT&T reception isn't very good right in this spot, so after supper, we settled in a different spot just a 100 yards or so away where it was much better.
Looking out from our campsite, there are fewer campers to be seen than in other years we've been here. But we are late in the season, so most folks are probably headed back north.
At dinner time, we decided to head back into town and go to our favorite Mexican restaurant in the world, Los Jilbertos. It's right on the main street just by the big traffic circle.
It's not a very elegant place, but the food is the best.
And here's our meal: burrito and enchilada combination, and two tacos.
Meanwhile, we hear from back home that Tanner Dog has started in as an electrician's apprentice, with EM Electrical. Here he is posing beside one of the jobs he's working on.
As I'm sitting outside writing this up, it's a beautiful night, the sky is completely clear and all my friends are shining brightly.
