There was no frost on the ground this morning, but only because we are in a very dry area. I think it was colder than last night outside, but it was cozy warm inside with our electric heater. The sun was shining brightly, and the campground was beautiful.
After much prodding, I finally convinced Doreen to go for a walk around the campground. Then we got going at 10am, and travelled a short distance to La Grande, Oregon, where we visited a Walmart to pick up a couple of things. The scenery is really barren around here, just desert much like Nevada.
After Walmart we headed on south for a short distance to Baker City. The scenery is the same barren landscape.
We stopped in to an information center in Baker City in order to look in to Hell's Canyon, which according to the internet is supposed to be spectacular. And the lady there said it was definitly worth going to. It is a little over an hour's drive east, but completely out of the way that we are heading for. We decided to give it a try, and headed across route 86. It got a little more hilly along route 86.
Well, here's Hell's Canyon. We were expecting huge cliffs dropping down to the river below. They advertise this as the Grand Canyon of Oregon. But, although it was a nice place, it was nothing to write home about. It looked like anywhere else you might drive.
The campsite here (N44 58 25.8, W116 51 25.7) was nice however. It is operated by the Electric Power authority that has dams along the Snake River. It is $8 plus tax per night at this time of the year. I couldn't figure out how much the tax was, but it said seniors got $1 off, so I put $8 in the envelope and hope we are not arrested and hauled into jail.
