A Rainy Day In Borrego Springs

They said chance of a shower in the forecast for today.  It was nice when we woke up, partly sunny and nicely warm.  But as the day progressed you could see patches of rain off in the distance, and it looked like eventually it would come our way.  We packed up at about 1pm and headed in to town, and on the way, Miss Travelaire got her first wetting down.  It stopped again though while we walked around Borrego.

We visited the thrift store (expensive), and the grocery store, but didn't buy anything.  So, we ended up going to our favorite Mexican restaurant, Los Jilbertos for a lunch of beef burrito.  We got one serving between us, we each had half of one of the two burritos on the plate, took the other one home, and I had half of that one for supper later on.  We still have the other half for lunch tomorrow🙂.  Here is Doreen sitting out on the patio in front of the restaurant.

Then we got the bright idea of trying to get a prescription for one of Doreen's medications in order to extend our stay for a few days.  Since we left almost a couple of weeks late because of Doreen's indecision in getting away, she didn't have a large supply of her medications.  Without adding to what she has, we will have to make a bee line home.  So, we found the Borrego Medical Clinic, which oddly is about 7 miles from the center of the town, and asked if they would give us a prescription for maybe a week or 10 days of her medication.  But no way would they do that without a big rigmarole of getting authority from back home, and that would be difficult to say the least.  We have enough trouble getting medications for a reasonable period of time as it is.   And in addition, our Doctor is off work at the present time so they would be dealing with some other doctor who knows nothing about her.  So, tomorrow I guess, we will begin our journey north so we don't get too low in supply.

Coming back from the medical center, we passed some of the metal sculptures that have sprung up around Borrego Springs the last few years.  We have noticed these before, but there have been more and more appeared over the years.

These are the inspiration of a Dennis Avery, who is an heir of a large corporation, and who bought up a very large parcel of land some years ago in Borrego Springs in order to keep it from development.  He came across a Mexican sculptor and commissioned him to construct these creatures, mostly animals that once roamed this area many years ago.

There are now over 130 of these out in the desert on this big tract of land.  Mr. Avery died recently, and a lady I talked to said the sculptures will probably just rust away in the desert.

I'm amazed at how realistic these metal creations are.  They are just iron panels bent and spot welded together; how he does that, to make such very lifelike animals, I don't know.

Well, as I'm typing this the rain is pouring down on poor Miss Travelaire, who is back parked in the same spot she was last night.  I put the awning out a little earlier, but the wind came up enough to start blowing the rain in on us, so we retreated in to Miss Travelaire's inner comfort:  not our typical Borrego Springs warm sunny weather (although it's still reasonably comfortable temperatures).  The rain is supposed to last at least through tomorrow everywhere down here, but then it should be back to our sunny weather.
