Windy Day

The sun shining through the trees this morning made for an artistic atmosphere. Pine forests are always nice because the needles on the ground keep underbrush from growing. We used the campground showers this morning, with Doreen getting mad over losing a bunch of quarters in them at first without getting any water! Then it was time for a walk around all the roads in the campground.

 

They were forecasting high winds for this morning, and that's the way it turned out. There were advisories about travel on US395, so we were uncertain about whether to start out or just stay put in the campground. Finally after sitting around for some time, we decided to give it a try and see how bad it was. We drove up into Reno along some secondary roads just to see how it went, and then finally, went onto 395 since we saw all sorts of other trucks and RVs on the highway.

 

Things went along ok, although fairly hectic driving up and across the border into California, but then we came to an exit where they were taking everyone off the road and not allowing the trucks and RVs to continue. So, Miss Travelaire was stuck there parked with all the trucks until they opened it up again, which was a couple of hours. After getting going again the driving was tough, not because it should have been, but because everyone was wanting to go too fast for the conditions. We came across one big mobile home trailer that was turned upside down on the side of the road, probably the reason they had closed the road earlier to overheight vehicles. After an hour of squeezing the steering wheel tightly trying to keep Miss Travelaire on the straight and narrow, we finally reached Susanville, which is a place that's big enough for a Walmart. There are very few places to camp along here because most campgrounds are closed for the winter. So here we are, hopefully for the night (N40 24 30.2, W120 38 09.6), along with one other RV and a couple of trucks. Not all that far from where we started considering the time spent! The wind has died down quite a bit now, but it's raining and cold. You'd think we were in Victoria!
