Death Valley National Park

It is a cool blustery day as we set off for Death Valley National Park. It is a short drive of a little over an hour. There were a few sprinkles along the way. Shortly after entering the park there is a lookout up on a hill, where we stopped and took in the view as we steadied ourselves against the wind gusts.

 

We were both dressed for winter! So much for worrying about dying of heat exhaustion in Death Valley!

 

Miss Travelaire was really happy though; she is the biggest and best in the parking lot!

 

After checking into the park at the visitor center at Furnace Creek using Doreen's senior's pass, we headed up to Texas Spring Campground (N36 27 30.8, W116 51 11.9) up on a hill across the road. Now we've been here a few times before, and each time we resolve not to come again. We certainly didn't find any of the wild flowers they talk about around our campsite! They find it hard to grow in a gravel pit!

 

And the wind was howling! And tents were uprooted!

 

But after awhile, the wind died down, and we were able to go out for a bit of a hike up a hill nearby. Doreen is still bundled up, but the wind was calm at least.

 

Here is the view from up on the hill. Miss Travelaire wants to see if you can pick her out amongst all the campers!

 

After dinner we had a campfire, and with the wind died down it was quite warm and pleasant. Just about everyone in the campground seemed to light fires tonight.
