Arriving At Our Destination

Today we continued on up I-79 and I-68 into Maryland.  It got very hilly, and we got up over 2700 feet in places.  We passed a sign on the road that said "Eastern Continental Divide."  I'd never heard of that before, but we sure went up and down some long hills.  We passed from having trees completely covered with leaves yesterday, to trees completely devoid of leaves at these higher altitudes.  Further on, as we passed from Maryland into Pennsylvania the trees seemed to regain their leaves.  The Pennsylvania countryside was flatter with farmland similar to southern Ontario.

We camped at Caledonia State Park (N39 54 53.7, W77 28 07.6), on US30 just a bit east of Gettysburg (of Civil War fame).  This was a pretty poor excuse for a campground, and probably the most expensive to date.  They had one interesting rule, however.  Usually, in campgrounds there is a rule that you cannot collect wood around the campsite to use for campfires.  In this one you can use any dead trees that are lying on the ground.  So we gathered up a bunch of branches and proceeded to light a fire.  The wood didn't seem wet, but we had a time getting it to go.  We finally succeeded after about an hour and were able to cook our hamburgers.  It was amazing how many people were camping in tents in this campground at this time of year (of course it was the weekend).  And - the temperature went down to 25F overnight, so the tenters must have had to bundle up!  This was the coldest night we've had on our trip - but we have no trouble keeping warm.

6 November, Sunday

We got up early enough to get to church in Gettysburg - about a 20 minute drive.  When we got there at about 10am there was nobody there (there was supposed to be Sunday school at 9:30, and service at 10:30).  Finally about 10 minutes later a car pulled in, and we found out that today was the change to standard from daylight savings.  When you're on a camping trip you don't keep up with the news!  Anyway, it meant Doreen was up in time for Sunday school as well as church!

 They seem to have nice church buildings around here - amazingly elaborate for the sizes of the congregations!

After church and after lunch, we headed on east through a maze of winding country roads through parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland and into Delaware to Doreen's sister Nina and Jim's place.  The GPS wanted to take up across a bunch of Interstates through big cities, but I laid down the law and insisted on a more pleasant drive.  Nina was at home; Jim and some of the kids were down visiting Glen and Gayle and were to be back tonight.

Delaware is definitely on the east coast - so, I guess we've arrived at our destination.  Of course, we haven't been to see Doreen's Mom yet.  We hope to do that tomorrow - it's just 3/4 hours away.
