A Great Place If You Like Trains!

I managed to set the alarm on my iPhone for 6:30 to catch the 6:00 ferry. Now wasn't that smart? But, both Doreen and I woke up at 4:30 anyway, and we were out to Swartz Bay in plenty of time. And, I guess because we had a reservation, which a lot of other people didn't have, we were almost the first on the ferry, and the VERY first off! We had a completely clear road ahead of us for the first few minutes.

It's just a short drive around and down to the Peace Arch border crossing. You always have to make a decision whether to go that way or via the truck crossing. Somehow, I think we made the wrong decision this time. We were in a long long lineup. But the maddening thing was that the two lanes of roadway broadened out to about 6 or 7 gates at the crossing. The other lane managed to hog all the gates but one, and our lane was limited to just the one gate. Now you'd think someone could figure that was not fair and do something about it. In addition, the guy at our gate was being extremely thorough with all the cars ahead, and I thought we were really in for a going over. But just 3 or 4 cars ahead, they changed to a different customs agent, and he was really fast. And all he wanted to know from us was where we were going and why. I think going to see the solar eclipse was a good answer, and he waved us right through.

Well, Miss Travelaire didn't like having to go through Seattle; she'd much rather have gone down the scenic windy roads south of Port Angeles. And you can see why. Just south of Seattle in a tangle of interchanges she took a wrong turn. Our GPS lady was being particularly difficult at this particular point, and at the last minute told us to turn off, but it was too late, and we ended up going east instead of south. Now usually in cases like this she quickly directs Miss Travelaire back to the same spot, but this time I guess she thought we'd enjoy the scenic route, and we managed to travel down about half the roads in Washington State, multi-lanes roads, two lane roads, windy roads, whatever. But, in fact by doing so, we managed to miss the high speed racetrack of Interstate 5 between Tacoma and Olympia, and Miss Travelaire was very happy about that!

One side
So here we are camped at the Toutle River RV Resort, sandwiched between Interstate 5 and the railway tracks. You can see the train is just behind that fence behind Miss Travelaire in the picture above. This is a very large campground, and narrowly spread out lengthways between these two highly traveled arteries, so everyone in the campground can enjoy the ambience of the traffic flow. It really doesn't bother us though; we never have worried about trains, planes, or automobiles when we camp.

The other side
This is what the boundary on the other side of the campground looks like :)

We are hoping we don't get into a traffic flow to the eclipse path on Interstate 5 tomorrow that resembles the flow at the Peace Arch. I think we'll get up and leave really early!

Yet another photo of a train grazing Miss Travelaire's rear end!
