In the morning we went for a long walk down to the beach - it was quite a ways, a mile or so. The big attraction was supposed to be the wreck of the "Peter Iredale", ship that was washed up on the beach. When we got there, this was all there was to see of the ship:
The sand on the beach was really nice fine sand. But it was not the bright coloured sand you usually see on beaches - it was very dark coloured.
After our walk, we drove over this bridge (in the background) across the Columbia River:
It is a long way across the river as you can see from this picture coming down off the bridge:
We then drove north along the Washington State coast and then inland towards Olympia, and up US101 to Port Angeles. This area going north towards Port Angeles seems like a really ugly depressed area of the country. I went to the ferry terminal to see about the situation with ferries for tomorrow - they said there is no problem with them being full. By this time it was dark, but we headed up the road towards Hurricane Ridge to Heart O' The Hills campsite (N48 02 14.4, W123 25 37.0) about 5 miles in from Port Angeles in Olympic National Park. It was a job getting parked in a campsite in the pitch dark, but we managed. Too cold for a campfire tonight - just had a banjo concert inside!
